Karlsruhe hit by devastating 1967 summer storm

On the afternoon of Saturday, July 22, 1967, a severe thunderstorm caused widespread damage across Germany, with particularly heavy impacts in Bavaria, the Palatinate, and the Rhine region, including Karlsruhe.

In Karlsruhe, the storm began around 4:30 PM, triggered by a passing cold front. The intense wind, rain, and hail lasted for approximately one hour, resulting in over 100 uprooted trees, destroyed vehicles, and broken windows. The local fire department responded to 42 emergency calls throughout the night to clear debris, secure roofs, and pump out flooded basements.

The storm caused significant transport disruptions. On the Autobahn, a multi-vehicle accident involving 15 cars resulted in several serious injuries. Within the city, fallen trees blocked tram tracks and roads, stranding commuters and visitors from local outdoor pools and the Federal Horticultural Show (Bundesgartenschau). While the city experienced chaos and property damage, no injuries were reported within the city limits.
