Karlsruhe Parks Overview and Essen Forest Survey Highlight Germany’s Urban Green Initiatives

The city of Karlsruhe maintains more than 43 parks and green spaces, ranging from central locations such as the Zoologischer Stadtgarten and Schlossplatz to peripheral areas like the Hardtwald and Knielinger See. Based on Google reviews, eight parks—including the Zoologischer Stadtgarten, Schlossgarten and Botanical Garden—are the most popular among residents. Studies by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology cite these green areas as improving air quality, reducing heat and flood risk, and enhancing public health.

In Essen, the organization Grün und Gruga has launched an online survey to gather input from forest visitors about the value and future development of the municipal forest. The responses will inform the Forstbetriebswerk, a legally mandated forest management plan covering the next ten years. The survey, accessible via QR‑code signs at forest entrances and a website, remains open until 16 August.
