Karlsøybruket trial begins over organized fishing crime

A major trial regarding organized fishing crime has commenced at the Nord-Troms and Senja District Court in Tromsø. Eight individuals, including two quay workers and six fishermen, are accused of systematic misreporting of fish landings between 2018 and 2023. The prosecution alleges that the defendants provided false information on landing notes, such as reporting cod as saithe, to allow for additional illegal catches.

Prosecutor Tor Børge Nordmo characterized the actions as serious environmental crime, noting that inaccurate catch data compromises resource monitoring and the scientific calculation of future fishing quotas. This could potentially threaten the long-term survival of fish stocks.

In addition to the individuals, Karlsøybruket AS and three fishing companies face significant financial penalties. Karlsøybruket AS faces a potential fine of 18 million NOK and the confiscation of 19 million NOK. News editor Erik Jenssen noted that the industry may be characterized by a ‘culture of silence,’ suggesting that police may struggle to obtain cooperation from witnesses or the accused.
