Karma Dyck sentenced to 4½ years for toddler's death in B.C
Karma Dyck, a 44‑year‑old mother, was sentenced by the British Columbia Supreme Court to four and a half years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the death of her 18‑month‑old child. The child died in July 2021 in New Westminster, British Columbia.
Dyck had been charged in February 2023 with manslaughter, aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and failure to provide the necessaries of life. She entered a guilty plea to the manslaughter charge in April 2026, and the court imposed the sentence on a Monday.
British Columbia’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said investigators “worked tirelessly” to determine what happened, noting that cases involving child deaths are hard to prove because evidence is often limited to private settings. Sgt. Freda Fong said investigators must go to great lengths to gather a wide range of corroborating evidence, adding that while nothing can undo the tragedy, establishing the truth helps provide answers and may help prevent similar incidents.
