Karmelo Anthony denied new trial in Austin Metcalf murder case
A Texas judge has denied a request for a new trial for Karmelo Anthony, who was convicted of murdering 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet in April 2025. Anthony, 19, is currently serving a 35-year prison sentence.
The motion for a retrial centered on a “gentleman’s agreement” made between prosecutors and Anthony’s original defense team. This agreement aimed to keep character evidence regarding both Anthony and Metcalf out of the original trial to prevent the proceedings from becoming overly inflammatory due to racial tensions.
During recent evidentiary hearings, previously undisclosed information surfaced. For Anthony, this included disturbing text messages where he allegedly fantasized about violence and a 2023 message threatening to “shoot the school up.” Prosecutors also noted a report from an ex-girlfriend alleging stalking on the morning of the incident.
For Metcalf, records revealed a history of bullying, physical aggression, and the use of racial slurs. Evidence also showed that Metcalf and his brother had previously been caught spray-painting racist and antisemitic graffiti. Anthony’s legal team argued that the exclusion of this information and certain courtroom restrictions violated his Sixth Amendment rights, but Judge Michael Chitty ruled the motion should be denied.
