Karnataka bans analogue paneer for one year

The Karnataka Food Safety and Drug Administration has issued a one-year ban on the manufacture, storage, distribution, and sale of analogue or non-dairy paneer under the name 'Paneer'. The order, effective from August 17, 2026, prohibits products that replace milk fat or milk solids with vegetable oil, vegetable fat, or other non-dairy ingredients from being marketed as genuine paneer.

This regulatory action follows testing of various paneer samples by state authorities and aims to protect public health and prevent consumer deception. Officials noted that analogue paneer, which uses palm oil and emulsifiers to mimic the texture of dairy paneer, is often used by hotels and restaurants as a cheaper alternative.

The ban does not extend to standardized food products such as processed cheese, frozen desserts, or cheese spreads, which are governed by separate FSSAI standards.
