Karnataka BJP faces leadership debates and protests

The Karnataka unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is experiencing internal discussions regarding leadership ahead of the 2027 local body elections and the 2028 assembly elections. Debates are intensifying over whether current state president B.Y. Vijayendra should continue his term or if a new leader should be appointed as his three-year tenure nears its conclusion.

While supporters highlight Vijayendra’s recent 170 km Ballari padayatra as a unifying achievement against the Congress government, critics argue that party organization has not strengthened sufficiently and internal factions remain unaligned. Recent meetings between Vijayendra and expelled legislator Basanagouda Patil Yatnal have also fueled speculation regarding potential political reconciliations.

Separately, BJP leaders led by Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka staged protests in Bengaluru to condemn remarks allegedly made by AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s father. The protest, which included calls for an apology from the Congress leadership, resulted in several BJP figures being briefly detained by police during an attempted march toward the Vidhana Soudha.
