Karnataka CM DK Shivakumar expands cabinet to full 34‑member strength

On 3 August 2026 Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar expanded his council of ministers, bringing the cabinet to its sanctioned limit of 34 members, including the chief minister. The oath‑taking ceremony was held at Lok Bhavan in Bengaluru and was administered by Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot. The Congress high command approved a list of 20 ministers – 12 new faces and 8 incumbents – and communicated the names to the chief minister. Only one woman, MLC Gayathri Shanthegowda, appeared on the approved list, but she was not sworn in, leaving the cabinet without a female minister. The expansion raised Muslim representation to three ministers and included no Brahmin minister. Several senior legislators who were omitted, notably Yashavantarayagouda V Patil and Belur Gopalakrishna, resigned from the assembly, and supporters of MLA S N Subbareddy called a bandh in three taluks of Chikkaballapur district. The reshuffle also saw the replacement of MLA Mankal Vaidya with former minister S S Mallikarjun, prompting further dissent within the ruling Congress party.
