Karnataka and Maharashtra face severe drought as central teams prepare to visit

Karnataka and Maharashtra are facing severe drought conditions, prompting the Indian central government to dispatch assessment teams to evaluate crop and water damage. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced that teams will visit both states, with a mission to Karnataka scheduled for October 3. In Karnataka, over 200 taluks are at risk of being declared drought-hit, and the state has sought significant central assistance for relief.

In addition to drought concerns, Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar is addressing several high-stakes water and environmental issues. He has invited a Tamil Nadu delegation to inspect the Mekedatu dam project site to allay fears regarding water misuse, asserting the water is intended strictly for drinking. Furthermore, the Karnataka Legislative Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution rejecting the Kasturirangan report on Western Ghats conservation in its current form.

Political tensions have also emerged as the BJP and JD(S) have refused to join the state government's proposed all-party delegation to Delhi to seek drought relief, leading to accusations of political posturing.
