Karnataka CM orders surrender of illegal firearms by November 1

Karnataka Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar has issued a directive for individuals possessing unlicensed or illegal firearms to surrender them to the government by November 1. Speaking at a National Forest Martyrs’ Day event in Bengaluru, the Chief Minister warned that strict enforcement measures will follow the deadline.

To encourage compliance, the government has stated that no criminal cases will be registered against those who voluntarily declare and hand over their weapons before the cutoff. However, officials noted they have intelligence regarding the presence of illegal arms and intend to conduct house visits to seize weapons from those who fail to comply or obtain proper licensing.

The initiative specifically targets the risks posed by unlicensed country-made guns, which have endangered Forest Department personnel. The Chief Minister advised those requiring firearms for personal protection or livestock security to seek official licenses. The policy was developed in consultation with Forest, Environment and Ecology Minister Ramalinga Reddy to address safety concerns for residents living near forest areas.
