Karnataka faces environmental concerns, heavy rain, and port inspections

In Karnataka, the Kasturirangan Committee report regarding the protection of the Western Ghats has sparked significant concern among residents of the Malnad and coastal regions. The report recommends designating 37 percent of the Western Ghats area across six states as Eco-Sensitive Zones (ESAs). In Karnataka, this would cover approximately 20,668 square kilometers, potentially impacting 1,439 villages across ten districts. Proposed restrictions include bans on mining, quarries, sand mining, and certain industries, as well as limitations on large-scale construction, hydroelectric projects, and commercial tourism. Local farmers express fear that these regulations will disrupt traditional agriculture, such as coffee and areca nut cultivation, and could lead to displacement.

Separately, heavy rainfall has been reported in Bengaluru, with some areas recording over 82 mm. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for 13 districts, forecasting increased rainfall across the state for the coming week due to low pressure in the Bay of Bengal.

In Mangaluru, Chief Minister DK Shivakumar conducted a surprise visit to the fishing port to address grievances from the fishing community. He inspected port development projects and discussed the need for dredging and new docking facilities. The Chief Minister also directed officials to investigate why port activities had been halted, warning of disciplinary action against officials if illegalities or negligence were found to be the cause of the disruption to local livelihoods.
