Karnataka Forest Department encounter kills three Tamil men

Three Tamil men—Anthony Sami, John Rose Peter, and Kumar—were shot dead during an encounter with Karnataka Forest Department officials in the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary in Chamarajanagar district on August 15, 2026.

Karnataka officials claim the men were suspected poachers who opened fire on forest personnel, prompting a retaliatory response. Authorities reported recovering firearms and bags containing wild animal meat at the scene. However, the victims' families and local residents have rejected this version, asserting the men were farmers and accusing officials of fabricating an encounter to cover up a massacre.

The incident has sparked significant unrest, including protests and the vandalism of the Shagya forest office. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay strongly condemned the killings, calling the official explanation “unacceptable” and demanding a high-level impartial investigation. In response, Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has ordered a magisterial inquiry to determine the circumstances of the firing.

Political leaders from various parties have called for different levels of investigation, including a judicial inquiry and a CBI probe. To ease local tensions, Hanur MLA Manjunath has assured the families of Rs 15 lakh in compensation and potential government employment.
