Karnataka government opposes Kasturirangan report on Western Ghats

Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has reaffirmed the state government's opposition to the Kasturirangan Committee report regarding the Western Ghats, citing concerns that its implementation could harm local livelihoods and farming communities. The Union Government has requested that Karnataka clarify its final stance on the Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA) notifications by September 27.

To address the issue, the state government has convened a three-day special session of the Assembly. The report is scheduled for discussion on the first day of the session. During field visits to districts such as Chikkamagaluru, Karwar, Kodagu, and Mysuru, Shivakumar noted that residents expressed fears regarding potential disasters and economic disruption.

In response to local demands, the Chief Minister stated that the government is examining proposals for a physical survey of the covered areas, similar to the Kerala model, and the potential formation of an expert committee. Additionally, the government is considering a proposal to implement a uniform 25-year limit under the Forest Rights Act.
