Karnataka forms SIT to reinvestigate 2012 Soujanya rape and murder case

The Karnataka government has established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a fresh de novo investigation into the 2012 rape and murder of 17-year-old Soujanya in Belthangady. This decision follows a direct order from the Supreme Court of India.

The SIT will be led by Inspector General of Police N. Shashikumar and includes several senior officers, such as C.K. Sudheer Kumar Reddy, Nikhila James, Lokesh Jagalasar, and Venkatesh Prasanna. Per the Supreme Court's mandate, the team is prohibited from including any officers who were involved in previous investigations conducted by the local police, the CID, or the CBI.

The investigation is tasked with completing its findings and submitting a report to the relevant court within three months. The case originally gained prominence in October 2012 when the victim went missing and was later found dead. While Santosh Rao was previously tried and acquitted by a CBI special court in June 2023 due to insufficient evidence, the Supreme Court has clarified that Rao will not be subjected to further prosecution in this matter.
