The Karnataka Cabinet has officially granted Tulu status as the state’s second additional official language. This designation applies specifically to the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, fulfilling a long-standing demand from the coastal region.

Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced the decision during a Cabinet meeting held in Mangaluru. In addition to the linguistic recognition, the government approved various development projects totaling Rs 32,611 crore. These include the Coastal-Malnad Karnataka Tourism Policy 2026, a 150-acre fisheries park, and approximately Rs 16,000 crore earmarked for rural roads, infrastructure, and rural development.

Rajya Sabha MP and Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade welcomed the decision, noting that state-level official status could accelerate efforts to include Tulu in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
