Karnataka High Court mandates interim compensation scheme for mob lynching victims

The Karnataka High Court has directed the State Government to formulate a scheme for providing interim compensation to victims or the next of kin in cases of mob lynching and violence. This directive follows the dismissal of pleas seeking to cancel bail for individuals accused in a lynching incident involving alleged pro-Pakistan slogans.

Justice Vijaykumar A. Patil emphasized the need for strict compliance with the Supreme Court guidelines established in Tehseen S Poonawalla v. Union of India. The court noted that current government orders lack specific provisions for interim relief, which should ideally be provided within thirty days of an incident. Additionally, the court mandated that notice must be issued to the victim or their kin before bail is granted to accused individuals in such cases.
