Karnataka labor disputes arise over work culture and job quotas
The Karnataka State IT/ITeS Employees Union (KITU) has criticized Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal following his comments regarding India’s work culture. Speaking at the India-Netherlands Business Forum, Goyal noted that in India, employees are unlikely to stop working at 5 o'clock or remind employers of the weekend. KITU condemned these remarks, arguing they promote a culture that disregards labor protections and encourages excessive work. The union described the glorification of constant availability as a risk to worker health, dignity, and work-life balance.
Separately, Karnataka Labour Minister Santosh Lad stated that the state government remains committed to pursuing legislation for job reservations for Kannadigas in the private sector. The proposed bill, which has been under consideration for three years, seeks to reserve specific percentages of management and non-management positions for local candidates. While the government intends to move forward after inter-departmental consultations, officials have noted the need to examine potential legal challenges and industry concerns regarding the impact on the technology sector.
