Karnataka launches plan to reduce salt intake by 30% by 2030

The Karnataka government has launched the Karnataka State Multisectoral Action Plan for Salt Reduction and Promotion of Healthy Dietary Habits. The initiative aims to reduce population salt intake by 30 percent by 2030, aligning with India’s global commitments and the World Health Organization’s recommendation of consuming less than five grams of salt per person per day.

Health and Family Welfare Minister U. T. Khader announced the plan during a Technical Advisory Group meeting in Bengaluru. The initiative seeks to combat non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as high blood pressure, stroke, and cardiovascular diseases, which are linked to excessive salt consumption. Current estimates suggest Indians consume between 8 and 11 grams of salt daily, nearly double the recommended limit.

The strategy focuses on three primary areas: salt use in the home, food consumed outside the home, and processed or packaged foods. To ensure coordinated action, the government proposed a State Steering Committee involving multiple departments. A Technical Advisory Group, chaired by Bhagavan B. C., Vice-Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, will provide technical guidance and support evidence-based measures to promote healthier dietary practices.
