Karnataka launches food safety crackdown and QR code complaint system

The Karnataka government has launched an intensified food safety enforcement drive, featuring a new QR code-based complaint system. This mechanism allows consumers to directly report violations regarding food, drugs, and pharmacy safety by scanning codes displayed at hotels and public establishments. State Minister U T Khader noted that the initiative aims to increase accessibility and speed up the department's response to violations.

Recent enforcement operations have resulted in the seizure of over 1,000 kg of unsafe food items. Inspections across the state, including Mysuru and Mangaluru, uncovered expired meat, spoiled vegetables, and fungal contamination. Authorities conducted checks at various establishments, including three-star and five-star hotels, warehouses, and multinational chains such as KFC, McDonald’s, Domino’s, and Burger King. The drive also targeted quick-commerce and food-delivery services like Zepto and Zomato.

Moving forward, the scope of inspections will expand to include hostels, educational institutions, railway canteens, and flight catering services. The government also plans to implement a toll-free number and a dedicated call center to support these efforts.
