Karnataka Legislative Council election results: Congress wins five seats, BJP two, JD(S) none

The Karnataka Legislative Council election for seven seats was held on Thursday, with voting conducted from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Assembly room 106. Legislators cast secret ballots at two polling stations within the room, and CCTV cameras and police were deployed for security. Counting began at 5 p.m. and the results were announced the same evening.

Eight candidates contested: five from the ruling Congress party, two from the BJP and one from the JD(S). A candidate needed at least 28 votes to win a seat. Congress secured five seats, BJP won two, while the JD(S) candidate fell short. Notable vote totals included Congress candidates B.K. Hariprasad (30 votes), Tippanna Kammakonur (30), P.V. Mohan (29), Shivanna Mallahalli (30) and Vinay Kartik (32). BJP candidates Raghav Kautilya (29) and Lingaraaj Patil (27) also succeeded. JD(S) candidate K. Govindraj received 14 votes, missing the threshold.

The election outcome reflects the current strength of parties in the 222‑member Assembly: Congress holds 134 seats, BJP 62, JD(S) 18, with a few independents and smaller parties. The result solidifies Congress’s dominance in the Council and sets the stage for upcoming legislative business in the state.
