Karnataka Legislature begins Monsoon Session amid political disputes
The Karnataka Legislature has commenced its Monsoon Session, marked by political tension between the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP and JD(S). Key developments include the appointment of Yathindra Siddaramaiah as the Leader of the House in the Legislative Council.
A major point of contention is the proposed Karnataka Regulation of Use of Government Premises and Public Property Bill, 2026. While Chief Minister DK Shivakumar maintains the bill applies equally to all organizations, the BJP alleges the legislation is a targeted attempt to restrict the activities of the RSS.
The session is expected to address several critical issues, including the Bidadi Township project, infrastructure corridors, and allegations regarding the Karnataka Public Service Commission. Meanwhile, regional unrest continues as a state-wide bandh called by Kannada organizations over the Cauvery water dispute saw significant participation in Mandya and Mysuru, though response was sparse in Bengaluru.
In separate social welfare news, the Karnataka State Women's Commission is working to improve healthcare, nutrition, and safety standards at women's shelter homes. Additionally, reports have emerged of cybercriminals impersonating Election Commission officials to defraud citizens during voter list revision processes.
