Karnataka milk producers demand ₹8 per litre price hike

Milk producers in Karnataka have issued a three-day ultimatum to the state government, demanding an ₹8 per litre increase in milk procurement prices and a corresponding rise in government incentives. Major unions, including Bamul, Chamul, Mandya Milk, and Tumkur, are backing the demand, warning of state-wide protests if a decision is not reached via a cabinet meeting.

Producers cite several economic pressures, including a 25% increase in the cost of cattle feed and raw materials, rising fuel and transportation expenses, and a 40% hike in milk packaging costs. Additionally, a severe drought has led to a shortage of green fodder, contributing to a decline in daily milk procurement from approximately 1.11 crore litres to roughly 1.03–1.06 crore litres.

Representatives noted that current milk prices in Karnataka remain lower than in neighboring states like Delhi, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan. While Karnataka Milk Federation officials acknowledged that the demand is long-pending and drought has complicated the situation, they noted that a significant hike would require final approval from the state government.
