Karnataka Minister K. M. Shivalinge Gowda faces bribery allegations

Karnataka Excise Minister K. M. Shivalinge Gowda is facing controversy following remarks made during a public grievance meeting in Sakleshpur on September 19. While responding to complaints about officials allegedly demanding money, Gowda suggested that citizens could “respectfully” offer something to officials who help complete their work, stating, “It is your dharma, but nobody should take money forcibly.”

The comments sparked immediate backlash from attendees, including farmers who questioned why citizens should provide tips to salaried officials. Social activist Dinesh Kallahalli has since filed a complaint with Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot, alleging the remarks could encourage corruption. Kallahalli cited the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and has called for the minister’s removal from the Council of Ministers.

Minister Gowda has rejected the allegations of encouraging bribery, claiming his statements were misunderstood. He clarified that he was advising people to respect honest officers and emphasized that no one should be forced to pay money.
