The controversy arose after Khan requested exemption from flag hoisting duties in Vijayanagara, citing a lack of time due to upcoming elections and organizational activities. The government reassigned the duty to Minister K. S. Basavanthappa. BJP members characterized Khan's request as an insult to the nation and demanded his removal from the cabinet.
