Karnataka political tension rises over Cauvery water and local employment
Political tensions are escalating in Karnataka regarding water management and employment rights for local residents. Opposition leader R. Ashok has criticized the D.K. Shivakumar-led Congress government, accusing it of failing to protect the interests of Kannadigas. Ashok alleged that despite declining water levels in reservoirs and shortages for local farmers and drinking water, the government is obligated to release 3,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu daily for the next 15 days.
Separately, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has expressed dissatisfaction with certain private companies, particularly in the IT sector, for allegedly neglecting local job seekers. Concerns have been raised that some firms in Bengaluru prioritize candidates proficient in Tamil or Telugu over those who list Kannada as their mother tongue, and are recruiting from outside the state without conducting campus interviews in local colleges. While the government has expressed intent to protect the rights and dignity of Kannadigas, critics note that recommendations from the 1984 Sarojini Mahishi report, which suggested job reservations for locals in the private sector, have yet to be fully implemented.
