Bengaluru luxury hotels raided over food safety violations
The Food Safety and Drug Administration Department in Bengaluru conducted a massive inspection drive targeting 26 three-star and five-star hotels across the city. Directed by Karnataka Health Minister U T Khader, 30 teams of food safety officers inspected properties to ensure compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Inspectors uncovered numerous violations, including unhygienic kitchen conditions, improper food storage, and the presence of expired dairy, bakery products, meat, and vegetables. Fungal growth on vegetables and the failure to separate vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items were also reported. Additionally, officials noted instances of food misbranding and non-compliance with FSSAI labeling requirements.
Significant quantities of unsafe food were seized and destroyed. Notable seizures included 76 kg of meat and 200 kg of vegetables at The Lalit Ashok (Annex South), 105 kg of expired products at The Radisson Blu (The Atria), and 72 kg of meat at Taj Yeshwantpur. Other properties affected included Shangri-La Bengaluru, Four Seasons Hotel Bengaluru, and Vivanta Bengaluru Whitefield. A total of 35 food samples, ranging from meat and milk to spices and sauces, have been sent to a food laboratory for further analysis. Authorities have issued notices to the food business operators, and legal adjudication proceedings are expected to follow.
