Southern Indian states debate delimitation and water disputes at Zonal Council

At the 31st Southern Zonal Council meeting in Mahabalipuram, chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, leaders from southern Indian states addressed critical issues regarding delimitation, water sharing, and medical education.

Southern Chief Ministers expressed significant concern over the proposed delimitation of Lok Sabha seats. They argued that a redistribution based on population could penalize states that successfully implemented population control. Karnataka and Tamil Nadu representatives requested that the current 543 seats be maintained for the next 25 years, with Karnataka's D. K. Shivakumar specifically advocating for the 1971 census to serve as the basis for delimitation.

Inter-state water disputes were also a central theme. Karnataka Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar defended the Mekedatu dam project, asserting it would benefit farmers in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry. Meanwhile, Kerala Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan proposed that Kerala would fund the construction of a new Mullaiperiyar dam to resolve long-standing disputes with Tamil Nadu.

Additionally, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay urged the central government for an exemption from the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for state-quota medical admissions, suggesting that seats be filled based on Class 12 marks to support rural students.
