Karnataka sugarcane farmers continue protest despite CM's appeal

Sugarcane farmers in Karnataka are continuing a padayatra (foot march) protest despite appeals from Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar to suspend their agitation. The protesters, seeking better pricing and solutions to rising cultivation costs, have rejected the Chief Minister's plea for dialogue, insisting on a clear assurance from Union Minister Pralhad Joshi.

Chief Minister Shivakumar met with protesters in Kittur, promising to convene a meeting at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belagavi after the Dasara festival. He pledged to bring together sugar factory owners, farmer representatives, and central government officials to find a lasting solution. He emphasized that the state government is committed to resolving the issues but noted that the involvement of the central government, banks, and factory owners is essential.

Opposition leaders have criticized the state administration's response. R. Ashoka, the Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, accused the Congress-led state government of remaining silent on issues like sugarcane weightage, while asserting that the central government has taken proactive steps regarding Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) and Minimum Support Price (MSP) for growers.
