Karnataka teacher recruitment faces legal challenge over linguistic exclusion

The Karnataka Department of School Education has announced a recruitment drive for 900 general Kannada teacher positions for primary school classes 1 to 5. Applicants must have cleared the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), such as KARTET or CTET, and hold specific educational qualifications including a two-year Diploma in Elementary Education or a four-year Bachelor of Elementary Education.

Simultaneously, a legal challenge has been filed in the Karnataka High Court regarding the state's broader recruitment approach. A petition filed by Urdu teachers and the Equal Rights Karnataka society alleges that the government's recruitment notifications arbitrarily exclude Urdu-medium and other linguistic-minority teaching posts.

The petitioners argue that despite the existence of over 4,200 Urdu-medium schools in the state and significant teacher shortages, the recent recruitment notifications do not provide for Urdu-medium positions. The plea contends that this exclusion violates constitutional rights regarding education and the preservation of linguistic minorities.
