Karnin Bridge railway project may bypass Świnoujście
Germany is revisiting plans to rebuild the southern railway connection to the island of Usedom via the Karnin Bridge. The project, estimated to cost approximately 700 million euros, is currently being prepared with funding from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which has allocated nearly 3 million euros for preparatory work.
While the project aims to restore historical rail links, the current proposed route differs from the pre-war path. Historically, the line connected Berlin to Usedom via the Karnin Bridge and through Świnoujście. However, the modern analysis suggests a route from Ducherow through Karnin and southern Usedom toward Heringsdorf, which would bypass Świnoujście entirely.
