Karol Nawrocki criticizes Polish leadership at August Agreements anniversary
During the 46th anniversary of the August Agreements held at the Gdańsk Shipyard, Polish President Karol Nawrocki delivered a speech criticizing current political leaders. Nawrocki categorized the historical participants of the 1980 agreements into three groups: those who were “krystaliczni” (pure in values), those who were “sprawiedliwi” (just) by leaving the communist party, and those who remained “wierni Moskwie” (loyal to Moscow).
The President asserted that individuals belonging to the latter group still hold key positions in the Polish state in 2026, accusing them of failing to respect democracy and prioritizing partisan interests. He characterized the current administration as being intolerant of opposition and lacking a true understanding of democratic principles.
Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski responded to these remarks on social media, suggesting that some individuals have built their careers on “late anti-communism.” Meanwhile, Piotr Duda, head of NSZZ Solidarność, noted that social dialogue with the former communist authorities appeared more effective than current engagement with the government of Donald Tusk.
