Karol Nawrocki vetoes state e-diary legislation
President Karol Nawrocki has vetoed legislation that would have established a state-run, free electronic school diary (e-dziennik). The veto blocks a planned pilot program for the 2026/2027 school year. The President stated he does not oppose the digitalization of schools but raised concerns regarding student data security, the projected costs exceeding 200 million PLN, and the rapid pace of implementation.
Education Minister Barbara Nowacka criticized the decision, calling it 'extremely unwise' and claiming it harms parents by forcing them to continue using paid commercial systems. She suggested the veto might be influenced by lobbying from private companies that benefit from the current market duopoly. Nowacka announced plans to request that services investigate potential lobbying activities related to the decision.
Government officials noted that without the law, the system cannot automatically pull data from the Educational Information System (SIO), which would force teachers to manually enter data twice, potentially increasing their workload. The legislation had previously been passed by the Sejm and accepted by the Senate.
