Karpe awarded Fritt Ords Honnør for social commentary

The Norwegian rap duo Karpe, consisting of Magdi Omar Ytreeide Abdelmaguid and Chirag Rashmikant Patel, has been awarded the ‘Fritt Ords Honnør’ award. The foundation, Fritt Ord, recognized the duo for their ability to expand the space for expression regarding identity, belonging, and social issues.

Bård Vegar Solhjell, chairman of the Fritt Ord Foundation, stated that the duo has a unique ability to capture the social mood while simultaneously posing critical questions. Their lyrics have sparked public debate on topics such as human dignity, solidarity, artistic freedom, and discrimination, often highlighting the experiences of minorities in Norway.

Karpe has achieved significant commercial success, including 13 Spellemann awards and massive concert attendance, such as drawing 105,000 people to their ‘Karpe World’ festival in Oslo this July. The duo has announced they will officially disband following a final tour concluding in 2028.
