Karpe receives Fritt Ord Honor amid lyric controversy

The Norwegian rap duo Karpe, consisting of Magdi Omar Ytreeide Abdelmaguid and Chirag Rashmikant Patel, has received the Fritt Ord Honor, an award recognizing contributions to the space for expression. The award has sparked significant debate due to controversial lyrics from the duo's past, including references to political figures and historical events.

During the award ceremony in Oslo, Chirag Patel addressed the controversy, noting that lyrics written in his youth continue to be subjects of debate. Sylo Taraku, a board member of Fritt Ord, praised the duo for expanding the understanding of Norwegian identity and building bridges through their music.

Controversy also arose regarding the press's ability to cover the event. Reports indicated that journalists were invited to the ceremony but were informed they would not be permitted to interview the winners. Fritt Ord director Knut Olav Åmås stated that the decision to forgo interviews was made by Karpe's management rather than the foundation itself.
