Kars authorities arrest mother and grandmother in infant death investigation

Authorities in Kars, Turkey, have launched a criminal investigation following the death of a one-day-old male infant. The investigation began after hospital officials flagged the circumstances surrounding the baby's death and subsequent burial as suspicious.

Upon judicial order, the infant's grave was exhumed. Initial examinations revealed that a napkin had been placed in the newborn's mouth, a finding that investigators believe contributed to the child's death.

Following the findings, the mother, H. K., and the maternal grandmother, B. E., were taken into custody. Both individuals have been formally arrested by the court and sent to prison. The maternal grandfather, S. E., was released under judicial control pending further legal proceedings.
