Turkey launches GEKİS digital livestock tracking system

Turkey's Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has launched the Secure Electronic Ear Tag Monitoring System (GEKİS) to digitize livestock tracking. Introduced by Minister İbrahim Yumaklı in Kars, the system replaces traditional plastic ear tags with electronic identifiers. This allows for the digital tracking of an animal's entire lifecycle, including birth, vaccinations, health records, movements, sales, and slaughter processes.

Developed in collaboration with the Presidency of Defense Industries, GEKİS aims to increase state oversight, manage disease outbreaks more effectively, and mitigate the risks of lost or counterfeit tags. The initiative targets over 17 million cattle, which represent an economic value exceeding 1.5 trillion lira. The ministry expects that even a one percent increase in efficiency through this data-driven approach could retain approximately 12 billion lira in annual production value.

In separate environmental initiatives, Minister Yumaklı noted that the number of national parks in Turkey has increased fourfold over the last 24 years, reaching 696. Additionally, the ministry has launched a nationwide family camping program across 81 provinces to foster environmental awareness among children, seeing high engagement with approximately 10,000 families applying for the program.
