Kars rock paintings reveal ancient history in Kağızman

Archaeological findings in the Camuşlu village area of the Kağızman district in Kars, Turkey, have revealed over 100 ancient rock paintings. Located at a strategic transition point between the Caucasus and Anatolia, these carvings provide significant insight into the region's earliest cultures.

The drawings feature various animal figures, including mountain goats and deer. According to Associate Professor Mustafa Karageçi of Kafkas University, these depictions reflect the relationship between nature, fears, and beliefs of nomadic groups during eras before written language.

Field research in the area has been conducted over several decades, including studies led by Professor Alpaslan Ceylan between 1999 and 2012, and Professor Akın Bingöl from 2012 to 2022. The findings are associated with the Paleolithic era and subsequent periods.
