Kaïs Al-A. appeal trial begins in Paris over IS leadership charges
The appeal trial of Kaïs Al-A., a 43-year-old Syrian man accused of holding a leadership role within the Islamic State (IS), has commenced in Paris. Al-A., who previously lived in Germany as a recognized asylum seeker, is accused of involvement in the 2013 and 2014 hostage-taking of seven Western journalists and NGO workers in Aleppo, Syria.
In a previous trial, the defendant was sentenced to 20 years in prison for membership in a terrorist organization, though the verdict is not yet final. The case gained international attention after a fellow Syrian refugee reported Al-A. to police in Dortmund, Germany, in 2015, identifying him as an IS explosives specialist known by the alias ‘Abu Hamza TNT’.
While German authorities conducted investigations and discovered a 4,200-page IS manual for manufacturing explosives on his computer, the German legal proceedings were discontinued in 2016 due to insufficient evidence. Al-A. was eventually arrested in Germany in 2019 following a request from French authorities.
