Kaïs Saïed calls for import rationalization and bank support in Tunisia
Tunisian President Kaïs Saïed has called for significant economic measures to address rising prices and a growing trade deficit, which reached 6 billion dollars in the first eight months of 2026.
During a meeting with Prime Minister Sarra Zaafrani Zenzri and Central Bank Governor Fethi Zouhair Nouri, Saïed urged banks—specifically public institutions—to play a larger role in supporting the national economy by facilitating easier access to credit. He emphasized that all banking establishments must strictly adhere to the Central Bank's circulars.
To combat economic instability, the President ordered the rationalization of imports and an intensified crackdown on corruption. Saïed defined corruption broadly to include not only malfeasance but also fraud, the obstruction of public services, and the poor treatment of citizens by the administration. He framed these efforts as essential to achieving social justice and the equitable distribution of wealth.
