Kasaplar Çarşısı to undergo restoration in Mersin
The Mersin Metropolitan Municipality has announced a restoration project for the historic Kasaplar Çarşısı to preserve its architectural character and reintegrate it into urban life. Built during the early years of the Republic, the approximately century-old structure was originally known as 'Sebzeli' due to its function as a fruit and vegetable market before evolving into a butcher's bazaar and various other shops.
Over the years, the building lost much of its original architectural identity due to unauthorized additions and physical damage. The restoration, managed by the municipality's Department of Science Affairs, aims to recover these original features.
Civil engineer Fırat Eren stated that the project is part of a broader effort to create a cultural route in the city center. The plan involves integrating the bazaar with nearby historical sites, including the Kırmızı Lacivert City Square, Karamancılar Mansion, and the Taş Bina, which is slated to become a City Museum.
