Kashim Shettima resumes duties ahead of schedule

Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Abuja from a two-week leave, resuming his official duties on Tuesday, August 18, 2026. His return occurs two days earlier than his originally scheduled date of August 20.

While Shettima has resumed work, he was not present at the Federal Executive Council meeting held on Wednesday, which was presided over by President Bola Tinubu. The Vice President’s early return coincides with the start of the 2027 election campaigns, following an announcement by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that campaigning would begin on August 19.

Shettima’s leave, which was approved by President Tinubu, was intended for “study, reflection, and intellectual renewal.” During his tenure, he has chaired the National Economic Council and overseen initiatives regarding economic development, food security, and digital transformation.
