Kashmir cultural heritage and cinema industry development

Researcher and author Dr. Vaidehi Taman is documenting the spiritual, literary, and civilizational heritage of Kashmir to highlight its intellectual roots beyond contemporary political headlines. Her work includes chronicles on the 14th-century saint-poet Lal Ded, the contributions of Acharya Abhinavagupta to Kashmir Shaivism and Indian aesthetics, and studies of the Nilamata Purana regarding ancient cultural traditions and social life.

Parallel to these cultural preservation efforts, there is a growing movement to establish a local cinema industry in the region. While the International Film Festival of Jammu and Kashmir showcases global cinema, advocates suggest the government should focus on building a domestic cinema economy. Although a fund now exists to support local filmmakers—some of whom have achieved recognition at festivals like Cannes and Venice—critics argue that current efforts often prioritize using the landscape as a backdrop for outsiders rather than fostering a self-sustaining industry told by Kashmiris.
