Kashmir education authority orders comprehensive book screening in schools

The Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) issued a circular directing heads of institutions in government schools, recognised private schools and coaching centres across the region to review every book in offices, classrooms, staffrooms and libraries. The screening aims to identify material that may violate religious sentiments, be inappropriate for students, contravene laws, harm national interest or conflict with the age‑appropriate guidelines of the National Education Policy 2020.

Institutions must document any objectionable books, noting title, year, author and publisher, and submit an abstract of the offending content to the Chief Education Officer (CEO) or Zonal Education Officer (ZEO) within seven days. Consolidated reports are to be filed by mid‑July, with the final submission to the DSEK directorate by July 17. Failure to comply may result in disciplinary action against responsible officers.
