Kashmir schools set to reopen July 22 after heatwave‑extended summer break

Intense heatwave conditions in the Kashmir Valley, with Srinagar reaching a seasonal high of 35.9 °C, prompted parents and students to demand an extension of the summer vacation for health reasons. Education Minister Sakina Ittoo announced that the government was monitoring the situation and would decide on any further extension.

The Jammu and Kashmir Education Department subsequently extended the holiday, pushing the reopening of all government and recognised private schools in the Kashmir Division and the winter zones of Jammu Division to July 22. Classes are expected to resume unless a new advisory is issued.

The decision aims to protect students from dehydration and heat‑related illnesses while minimizing disruption to the academic calendar.
