Kashmir World Film Festival to prioritize local filmmakers

The Kashmir World Film Festival (KWFF) is preparing for its sixth edition, scheduled for November. Founder-director Mushtaaque Ali Ahmad Khan announced that this upcoming iteration will place a special emphasis on filmmakers from the Jammu and Kashmir valley to promote inclusivity and support local talent.

While previous editions have featured international entries from countries such as the US, Italy, and Korea, there is a growing call to ensure the festival fosters a genuine local film economy. Discussions surrounding the event highlight the need to move beyond using the region merely as a scenic backdrop for outside productions. Instead, the goal is to provide infrastructure and opportunities for local artisans, musicians, and filmmakers to control their own narratives.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has previously encouraged filmmakers to seek authentic stories from the region's people rather than just its landscapes, a sentiment echoed by filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, who urged local youth to pursue cinema. The festival aims to build an ecosystem where masterclasses and workshops lead to professional success for local participants.
