Kashmiri filmmaker Arfat Sheikh released from ICE detention

Kashmiri filmmaker Arfat Sheikh has been released from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention on bond following his arrest on September 24 at Washington Dulles International Airport. Sheikh, an award-winning filmmaker known for works such as ‘Saffron Kingdom’, was detained as he disembarked a flight from California.

While Sheikh has been released, his deportation proceedings remain ongoing, with a hearing scheduled for October 27. A campaign organized by his friends and relatives maintains that Sheikh has a pending asylum application and is authorized to live and work in the United States.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that Sheikh legally entered the country on a temporary basis but subsequently overstayed his lawful admittance. The DHS noted that a pending application does not grant legal status, though they affirmed he would receive due process.
