Kaspars Gorkšs selected as candidate for Latvian State Chancellor

Kaspars Gorkšs, a former professional footballer and former president of the Latvian Football Federation, has emerged as the selected candidate for the position of State Chancellor of Latvia. His candidacy follows a competitive process involving 18 candidates after previous attempts to fill the role were unsuccessful.

Gorkšs holds a bachelor’s degree in law and a master’s degree in political science. He currently serves as the director of the Confederation of Latvian Employers (LDDK). His appointment is pending a final decision by the Cabinet of Ministers.

The candidacy has sparked public debate regarding the transition from professional sports to high-level state administration. Critics have questioned his lack of direct experience in public administration, while supporters, including Vladimir Šteinbergs, argue that the discipline and ambition required for elite sports are transferable skills and that a sporting background should not be used as an argument against a candidate if they meet all educational and professional requirements.
