Gen Z in Asia-Pacific increasingly views AI as a friend

A Kaspersky study involving 7,200 people across 18 countries reveals that a significant portion of Generation Z is integrating artificial intelligence into their personal lives beyond mere utility. In the Asia-Pacific region, approximately 32% of Gen Z respondents consider AI to be a friend, with Malaysia seeing a slightly higher rate of 33%.

While many use AI for practical tasks such as information retrieval, studying, and idea generation, a notable segment uses the technology for emotional support or to discuss personal issues they are reluctant to share with humans. In Vietnam, 42% of Gen Z respondents reported using AI to discuss personal matters.

This growing emotional reliance raises cybersecurity concerns. Kaspersky warns that users may inadvertently disclose sensitive information, including passwords, financial details, or identity documents. The study also highlights a gap in digital safety, noting that many young users do not consistently apply basic security precautions when interacting with AI services.
