Kassavetia prison to implement AI surveillance system

The Kassavetia agricultural prison is set to implement an advanced surveillance system utilizing artificial intelligence to enhance perimeter security. Following recommendations from the Prison Council, the Ministry of Citizen Protection approved funding for the project to address recurring issues with inmate escapes.

The new system, which is expected to be fully installed by the end of November, will feature 24-hour monitoring capabilities, including motion detection and thermal imaging to assist during nighttime or low-visibility conditions. The technology is designed to automatically process images and alert staff to suspicious movements.

The upgrade follows recent security breaches, including a recent escape by an inmate working in the prison garden. Officials noted that existing fencing, which is approximately 1.5 meters high, and current staffing levels have proven insufficient to prevent escapes, particularly among inmates under semi-liberty status.
