Kassel cultural centre bans all national flags for World Cup viewings

The Boreal beer garden at the Schlachthof cultural centre in Kassel announced that no national flags – including Germany’s black‑red‑gold and those of the 48 World Cup participants – may be displayed during public viewings of the tournament. Management said the policy, in place for years, aims to prevent nationalism and keep the venue’s focus on migration and integration.

Owner Mirko Zapp clarified that the ban does not target any specific country and that jerseys remain allowed. The decision sparked a social‑media backlash, boycott calls and heated criticism from local politicians. Former SPD city councilor Volker Zeidler called it “nonsense”, while Green leader Pilar Butte and CDU politician Maximilian Bathon both denounced the move as an overreach, labeling it an “ideological own goal”. The controversy has amplified a broader debate over the display of national symbols during the World Cup in Germany.
